Surgery

There’s something about surgery that can be stressful and nerve wracking, whether it’s a human or an animal family member. At Highland Animal Hospital, we understand the uncertainty that you’re experiencing and we want to set your mind at ease. We’ve worked hard to ensure that each surgery performed at our hospital, whether routine or complex, is as stress-free as possible. When it comes to surgical care, your pet’s safety and comfort are always our top priority!

We offer a variety of surgical services, all performed by our highly skilled veterinarians using the most modern techniques and equipment and always adhering to the highest standards of care. Our state of the art surgical suite provides a clean, well-lit environment where our veterinarians and care team can deliver the highest quality surgical care – before, during and following any procedure.

At Highland Animal Hospital, we never want to place our patients at risk – especially those that are older or are considered to be high-risk due to existing medical conditions. We utilize only the safest available anesthetics, which are tailored to each patient’s unique needs and health profile. The goal is to make each procedure as safe as possible, and we achieve this by proactively minimizing risk throughout the entire process.

Prior to surgery, your pet will receive a thorough exam and various diagnostic tests to verify that he or she is healthy enough to proceed. Once we’ve got the go-ahead, we’ll carefully prep your pet and administer an appropriate dosage of pain medication to help make them as comfortable as possible during surgery. Our well-trained, experienced veterinary technicians and assistants will be on hand to monitor your pet’s wellbeing throughout the entire procedure.

When surgery is complete, your companion will be safely relocated to our recovery area where we will continue to monitor them until you arrive to pick them up. Before you bring your pet home, we’ll carefully explain any post-operative care instructions that we may have for your pet, including a customized pain management plan to make the recovery process more comfortable.

Cryosurgery

One of the most innovative surgical services we offer at Highland Animal Hospital is cryosurgery. This type of surgery uses extreme cold produced by nitrous oxide or, in rare instances, liquid nitrogen. This extreme cold is effective in destroying diseased tissue and can be used to treat almost any type of skin tumor in which the tumor has exteriorized. These types of cancers or tumors may include:

  • Oral Cancers
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma
  • Malignant Melanoma/Melanosarcoma
  • Epulis/Acanthomatous
  • Epulis Fibrosarcoma
  • Tumors of the Tongue
  • Mast Cell tumors on Toes or Paw Pads
  • Perianal Adenomas and Carcinomas
  • Anal Gland Tumors (close to the surface)
  • Eyelid Tumors
  • Tail and Tail-Base Tumors

If your companion suffers from any of these conditions, cryosurgery might be the best option for taking care of the problem.

If you have any questions or concerns about your pet’s surgery – even if it’s just a simple spay or neuter procedure – please do not hesitate to call. We’re more than happy to place your mind at ease and help you feel more comfortable about bringing your pet to us for all of his or her surgical care needs.
